The Netherlands, though they're a monarchy, have been one of the most liberal countries in the History. They are the very first country where homosexual marriage, weed and prostitution were accepted. Besides, during the World War II, they were neutral and they sheltered many jewish who came from Germany, like Ana Frank. In that era, there was a tram line (number 8) which carried the jewish people from Amsterdam to different concentration camps and today if you pay attention, you'll realize the tram line number 8 doesn't exist for that reason.
Amsterdam is also known for art. Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Banski are some of the names that come to my mind right now. Besides this, Amsterdam is very popular for its canals, tulips, mills, bikes and floating houses.
The official language of The Netherlands is dutch, a very difficult language. But if you speak English you don't have to worry because it's the second country in the world that speaks the best English!
Here are some personal recommendations if you're thinking about visiting the city:
- Take a travel card according to the days you're going to stay. It's cheaper than buying single tickets.
- Book a boat instead of an apartment or a hotel room. I didn't book it because it was December and it was really cold there, but I think a floating house is a very cool option to see the city from another perspective and it's not so expensive as it seems.
- Get lost on the streets. Amsterdam is a beautiful city to discover and to take photos to every single corner.
- Visit the city in Spring. As I told you before, I went in December and apart from the cold, I couldn't visit tulip fields and other places which are so cool.
- Book a free tour, they're so useful and the guides are so kind. If you're interested in Spanish tour, we booked this one.
- Go to a coffee shop, though you don't smoke. You'll see the city with other eyes.
- Wear cash apart from your credit card. In my case, I had some issues and I couldn't pay with my credit card, so if you want to avoid awkward situations, take cash.
- Go to the Heineken Museum, though you don't like beer (like me). It's a very interesting experience and you can drink and dance!
- Rent a bike. I'm very clumsy and we didn't do it, but I regret it. Bikes have priority in this city, even the tram stops when a bike is on the road.
- Be careful when you're walking on the street, there are bikes, cars, trams and it's very chaotic.
- Go shopping. Amsterdam is one of the most popular European cities and it has many cool stores.
- Don't forget the umbrella. Rain is something that characterizes Amsterdam but don't panic, in my opinion, it's beautiful as well (believe me, I can tell you🙃)
So, do you want to go to Amsterdam? It's one of my favorite cities not only for its beauty, but for its history.
Descubre Ámsterdam: Una ciudad polifacética
Ámsterdam es una de las ciudades más populares de Europa junto a París, Roma y Londres. La ciudad neerlandesa es hermosa y yo tenía muchas ganas de ir y finalmente conocer la ciudad. Es una de las ciudades más bellas en las que he estado. Sus calles te rodean, pero también su lifestyle. No sabía mucho sobre Ámsterdam y los Países Bajos e ir allí fue la mejor manera de conocer el país y la ciudad.
Los Países Bajos, aunque tengan monarquía, han sido de los países más liberales en la historia. Son el primer país donde se aceptó el matrimonio homosexual, la marihuana y la prostitución. Además, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fueron neutrales y acogieron a muchos judíos provenientes de Alemania, como el caso de Ana Frank. En esa época, había una línea de tranvía (número 8) que llevaba a los judíos de Amsterdam a los diferentes campos de concentración y hoy, si prestas atención, te darás cuenta de que la línea de tranvía número 8 no existe por ese motivo.
Ámsterdam también es conocida por el arte. Van Gogh, Rembrandt y Banski son algunos de los nombres que se me vienen a la mente en este momento. Además, Ámsterdam es muy popular por sus canales, tulipanes, molinos, bicicletas y casas flotantes.
El idioma oficial de los Países Bajos es el holandés, un idioma súper difícil. Pero si hablas inglés no tienes de qué preocuparte, ¡ya que es el segundo país del mundo que habla el mejor inglés!
Estas son algunas recomendaciones personales si está pensando en visitar la ciudad:
- Compra una tarjeta de transporte según los días que te vayas a quedar. Es más barato que comprar tickets individuales.
- Reserva un bote en lugar de un apartamento o una habitación de hotel. Yo no lo reservé porque era diciembre y hacía mucho frío allí, pero creo que una casa flotante es muy buena opción para ver la ciudad desde otra perspectiva y no es tan caro como parece.
- Piérdete en las calles. Ámsterdam es una ciudad hermosa para descubrir y hacer fotos a cada rincón.
- Visita la ciudad en primavera. Como te he dicho antes antes, yo fui en diciembre y aparte del frío, no pude visitar los campos de tulipanes y otros lugares que son muy guais.
- Reserva un free tour, son muy útiles y la mayoría de guías son súper amables. Si te interesa en español, nosotros reservamos ésta.
- Ve a un coffee shop, aunque no fumes. Verás la ciudad con otros ojos.
- Lleva efectivo aparte de tu tarjeta de crédito. En mi caso, tuve algunos problemas y no podía pagar con mi tarjeta, así que si quieres evitar situaciones incómodas, coge dinero en efectivo.
- Ve al Museo Heineken, aunque no te guste la cerveza (como a mí). ¡Es una experiencia muy interesante y puedes beber y bailar!
- Alquila una bicicleta. Yo soy muy torpe y no lo hicimos, pero me arrepiento. Las bicis tienen prioridad en esta ciudad, incluso el tranvía se detiene cuando hay una bicicleta en la carretera.
- Ten cuidado cuando estés caminando por la calle, hay bicicletas, coches, tranvías y es súper caótico.
- Ve de compras. Ámsterdam es una de las ciudades europeas más populares y tiene muchas tiendas geniales.
- No te olvides el paraguas. La lluvia es algo que caracteriza a Ámsterdam pero que no cunda el pánico, a mí la ciudad llovida me parece preciosa (créeme, lo he vivido...).
Así que, ¿te animas a ir a Ámsterdam? Es una de mis ciudades favoritas ya no sólo porque sea preciosa, sino por su historia.
